Second graders from Mrs. Grimes’ and Miss DelGrego’s classes and fourth through sixth graders from Mrs. Oeinck’s class recently visited Sivicki’s Farm in Clinton for a fun and educational field trip.
Students enjoyed a hayride through the fields where they had the opportunity to pick out a pumpkin and two pieces of dried corn. Along the way, they learned about how corn can be left hanging to dry and later used to make popcorn.
The farm also provided students with a hands-on opportunity to learn about sunflowers. Students removed seeds from dried sunflowers and discovered that the seeds can be used to feed birds during the winter or planted in the spring.
After learning about local crops, students had time to enjoy the farm’s corn maze and small playground. It was a fun-filled day that combined learning and exploration while giving students the opportunity to see how crops are grown and used right in their own backyard.
A blast was had by all and MLK students left with new experiences and a greater appreciation for local agriculture. A big thank-you to the staff at Savicki’s Farm Market, as well as our teachers, parent chaperones and bus drivers, for making the day run so smoothly!
